Tuesday Tips: Painting with Values
Hello everyone, SarcasmNymph (https://www.deviantart.com/sarcasmnymph) here for another Tuesday Tips and today we are talking about values. So if you are a painter, primarily a digital painter, you would have heard about values and the idea of painting in grayscale.
But what does that mean?
Value refers to the lightness/illumination of the hue you are painting with. White patches are the highest values and pitch black darkness are the lowest values. An efficient way to see the form in digital painting is to have an all-black color layer on top of all your layers.
"Form" is an artists way of using hues, colors and values and are other art principles to paint objects th

Free (and cheap) Art Programs
Update: 7/20/2016 - I haven't maintained this list in years, primarily because I no longer have access to a computer. I simply can't try programs out anymore. If you want to expand the list, feel free to help by providing reviews, screenshots and links to your program of choice. In the meantime, if people are interested in reviews of iPad/iOS art apps, I can provide that. Otherwise I will not respond to art program suggestions. Sorry.
Photoshop is a great program, but despite it's many features it's a bit pricy at $999. I created this list for people with smaller wallets and certain art needs.
The programs are listed according to what type

Welcome
Greetings everyone. Glad you can join us for this momentous occasion. In this event we'll display recent work from talented members. The group gallery holds many drawings that are seen by hundreds of Deviants but sadly many are under the rug unable to be seen by the human eye. The goal of the journal is to feature both popular and underrated drawings. We'll only feature 10 pieces per category and 1 drawing per member. Also a reminder that members no longer need to submit their drawings to the feature folder. Your now able to submit your drawings to any folder that fits the category. Only submit drawings to the feature folder when your
As many of you have already heard or been made aware, there is a group of people on Pinterest who is going around pinning our art and using them as they see fit. The problem with that is that they're using them to give away as adoptables, which is completely unacceptable considering most of those were made by artists who have already sold the designs. They have absolutely no right to do this, use our characters to RP with them, or what have you.
I am going to make this perfectly clear.
I do not allow my works to be reuploaded anywhere. I don't care if there's been credit given, if you can't bother to ask for my permission to use my images,
For many artists, art theft is a frustrating reality. No matter how we watermark, logo, or constrain the resolution of our work, there are instances where artwork will be reposted, ripped, or used for commercial gain without credit or compensation. For some, this can be almost flattering, to know that there are those that like your work enough to steal it. But, the fact still remains, that your work has been used without permission, and for no gain of your own.
My ExperienceI have been a photographer for four years now, and throughout that time I am always learning. Part of that education is around copyright, and how to protect my work. The

A guide about referencing
We are a group of artists that have noticed there's widespread confusion and misconceptions spreading about the limits and ethics of referencing, so we have decided to help the community by clearing up the idea of what referencing is! -- You can also watch a video about it, just click here!
What is referencing?
When we talk about “referencing,” we could also talk about “searching for information.” Imagine that you have to do an essay for school about plants, animals, planets, in other words, a subject you don’t know much about. What’s the first thing you do before you start writing? Search for information

Cyber Bullying. Please read.
Please do not mention names of ANY deviants in the comments. If you do, I will hide your comment. We're not here to name drop, thank you.
Dear cyber bullies,
It's NOT right to send notes to people saying:
-Go die because they're heavily influenced by someone's art
-They're worthless
-You want a commission, give them references, etc, then when the artist notes you back, telling them their art is shit
It's NOT right to:
-write hate comments on someone's page
-make a new account several times after being blocked just to harass someone again
-harass the commissioners and adoptable buyers of other artists
-attack someone on multiple websites be

Digital artists - Important issue on Paypal:
So, due to recent changes with Paypal which "does not protect digital artists", I think I will be contact Paypal via phone later this week to clarify things. Unfortunately, I really depend on Paypal so I most likely won't be changing companies for handling my finances with my art - there's not many options out there that I'm willing to trust.
If you have a question you want to be clarified with Paypal about digital art sales, please post them below.
I have a Paypal business account so I am unsure if this issue would effect me, but it seems to have really concerned a lot of "regular" paypal users.
